History Of The Old Rectory
The Old Rectory in Thurgarton traces its origins back to the 17th‑century Manor House, first recorded in a 1731 Trinity College, Cambridge survey on the site of a moated farmstead. Believed to have been built by Royalist John Cooper following the Restoration, it was later tenanted by the prosperous Brettle family—farmers and yeoman lenders—who occupied the home until the 1840s
In 1848, the estate was adapted into a new parsonage by Trinity College to serve the expanded clerical living. The Rev. Henry Lea Guillebaud became the first resident, followed by Rev. Atwell Baylay, a noted liturgical historian who lived there for nearly five decades until it ceased ecclesiastical use in 1935.
Post‑parsonage years saw the property entering private hands: first the Wigley family, then the Farrs—local community figures who enhanced the grounds with tennis courts and swimming facilities and hosted village events through the 1960s–1980s.
Today, this Grade II‑listed gem—a handsome blend of Georgian and Victorian architecture—stands proudly in its manicured grounds, a testament to centuries of local heritage, ecclesiastical significance, and community life .
